Original manuscripts dealing with the planning, design and operation of all types of transportation systems are published by the Journal of Advanced Transportation. The manuscripts may be expository, mathematical or methodological in content.

The referees (who remain anonymous) are requested to make one of the following recommendations regarding a manuscript:

1. Acceptance for publication
2. Acceptance subject to minor clarifications and modifications. A separate list of the requested changes should be enclosed.
3. Request for significant clarifications, modifications to be followed by further review. The referee should outline her/his concerns regarding the paper and the reasons for the requested changes in a separate document.
4. Rejection of the manuscript. The reasons should be stated clearly.

In all cases the referee's recommendation should be made in a separate confidential letter. The detailed comments should be attached to the letter. The detailed comments, and in some cases portions of the letter, will be sent to the author(s) of the manuscript.

Some of the questions the referee should have in mind when undertaking the review are given below:

1. Is the manuscript in accordance with the (enclosed) Instructions to Authors?
2. Is the title reasonable, given the contents of the manuscript?
3. Is the abstract a fair and reasonable summary?
4. Are articles that are relevant to the issues discussed in the manuscript cited and reviewed in sufficient depth?
5. Is the manuscript sufficiently original in content?
6. Are there major errors in the manuscript and, if so, can they be remedied?
7. Is the manuscript well organized and is the standard of English satisfactory?

The referee is requested to explain her/his concerns to the author(s) as clearly as possible, to relate the comments to specified locations in the manuscript and to suggest improvements in a positive manner whenever possible.
